Will a ྞ rim and tone ring fit in a ྈ?

From Ks_5-picker on 11/10/2014 7:10:56 AM

I love my '76 Bellflower, but I played a 2 1/2 hr gig with it and the weight just about killed me.

I've got a chance to buy a woody block rim with cocobolo tone ring that was custom made for a '98 vintage. I just wondered what are the chances it would slip in without recutting the heel, which I would not want to do.If I had to make a shim,I wouldn't mind.

With a 22 year difference,I suppose I'd have to be lucky for it to fit,but just wondered what the concensus thought is.  thanks............Rod

Rod,
We could have made a custom solid old wood Tony Pass rim to replace both the tone ring and old rim for $500 plus shipping. I have no idea what you're buying and whether it will fit or not.

Sounds like a good plan. This is the Buddy Blackmon banjo,319-3,I think it is.I'm sure it could use a little TLC after 38 yrs.
This banjo stays in tune better than any banjo I've ever had. Even with a shubb capo,it requires very little retuning when I clamp it on.5th string is the same way.

Rod,
The Buddy Blackmon banjo was #119-3 made June !, 1976. You just missed the serial number by one digit. We could do the retrofit to a solid wood rim if you want, but I would keep the original tonering and rim.

Rod,
I will have to order the solid old wood rim, so please confirm the order by phone with your credit card.

I will let you know.might take a week or two to make financial arrangements.
I read a review in the banjo newsletter one time that stated that an archtop Pass woody might be preferable to a flathead.Have you any opinions on that,Geoff?
I will sure keep the old rim. It's signed "For Buddy" on the rim and resonator as well. I heard "East bound and down" on the radio THIS VERY Morning. I told the guy I was riding with that he was listening to my banjo......not sure I convinced him. ;)
