Where do you capo?

From BobbyE on 8/6/2014 3:08:19 AM

Was wondering where exactly do you place your capo when in use?  I have found that on my Sunflower placing the capo right on top of the frets gives the best intonation to my ear and tuner.  Others banjos I own, or have owned, not so.

When capoing a banjo, just like fretting with your fingers, you should press as close as possible to the fret for the cleanest sound.
Maybe your other banjos' frets weren't placed accurately enough, the neck wasn't good or maybe the banjo simply wasn't set up properly.

I have seen high quality banjos that are capoed a bit differently as to where the capo is in regard to the frets. The banjos I spoke of are all high quality banjos. I was just wondering where other Stelling owners found their banjos to intonate best regarding placement of capo. Not really looking for instructions on where to capo the banjo.

Bobby,
I have always positioned my capos about 1/4" in front of the fret, and if they are adjustable like the McKinney and Paige types, I do not tighten the thumb screw all the way till the strings are all flattened against the fretboard. Since the strings will move sideways easily with most capos during application, I hold the cross bar down on the strings as close as I can to going straight downward with the capo centered across the fingerboard without bending the strings and then tighten the thumb screw as needed or release the clamp, depending on the capo.

Thanks Geoff. I will try your method and see how it goes. I do have a Showcase on it so it is a McKinney style capo. Not complaining about the way I am capoing it now, just wondering what others' experience might be.

I use the Paige type capo and place it directly on top of the fret. The theory being that it will detune the least. Still needs some touch-up, but not much. Is there a reason not to place it on the fret?
