Bellflower

From dc48 on 7/29/2014 3:12:03 AM

A few months ago a friend passed away and his wife sold me a 79 Bellflower he owned. I didn't even know he owned a banjo. He never played one around me. I already have a newer Red Fox and didn't really need it, but wanted to help her out. It is like new for it's age. Doesn't look like ever played. Found it has a block rim that I didn't know they had in Stellings. Wanting to sell it, but don't know what it is worth since haven't seen them for sale with a block rim. It appears to be all original. I'm hoping to retrieve what I gave her for it which was $1850. Question is do you think I can get my money back or should I ask for more or less and take a loss. Thanks for your input.

That banjo, in the condition you described should be worth more than $1,850. I don't know the exact worth, but I'm guessing around $2,400.

Agreed.
Getting your money back won't be a problem.
You could very well get around 2400 for it. I'd say 2200 in a day or 2.

I think you are low balling yourself. I bought an '88 mint Stelling Masterpiece from Elderly Instruments 3 years ago for $3900. They have a couple of vintage Stellings listed now for much more than $1850. Check their web page.

Thanks for the input. I was mainly concerned about getting my money back and knowing that the block rim was original. I didn't want to advertise it as original not knowing if the rim was or not. Learn something new everyday even at age 70.

I would think the block rim makes it more valuable.

Why don't you sell it for what it's worth and split the difference with your friend's widow?

That's an idea. Got to get a camera that works so I can post.

You could even get a quote from Elderly. They can buy outright or sell on consignment for you.

Thanks so much for the comments. What a great group to hear from. I was totally surprised to receive and talk to Mr. Stelling himself about the banjo after posting. Such a super person to take the time to discuss things about your banjo. Wander what other builder would do that. Ted

Yep, the 70's model Stellings came with block rims.
