Scratched resonator - fix or leave?

From pjfolino on 7/2/2014 4:55:15 AM

Jamming on the weekend I scratched my resonator - not through to the wood, only the lacquer. Wondering whether I should try a repair job or just leave it. I tried to polish it out with Stelling polish but the scratch is too deep. Thanks!

Stelling resonators are so beautiful you hate not to fix them . Geoff buffed mine once, but ups lost it. I tracked it down, thankfully. So there is risk if you put it on the bus to Virginia. You might try McGuire's #7 but I'd check with Geoff.

A minor scratch in the resonator can usually be sanded with 1500 or 2000 grit wet sand paper and then buffed out with our normal grit compound. Our Glyde-Cote polish does not have the grit in it to do that kind of work. That's why the light sanding is needed. If you sand too much you'll expose the wood and have to have the resonator refinished. I have not tried it, but I've seen ads on tv for a car polish scratch remover. That might work. If it doesn't, the product is bogus.

Unless the scratches are pretty bad, I wouldn't do anything other than a polish. You know that there will be more scratches over time. I do my best to make sure my belt buckle is turned away from the front, but even the leather of the belt will cause some frosting of the finish. I would think too much buffing over time would make the finish thinner and thinner.
I have wondered why someone doesn't sell a sticky pad that can easily be applied and removed from the banjo back. Just makes sense....

Maybe Geoff could install snaps like the hollowbody gretch's had with the pads..lol talk about UGLY! Seriously sometimes I'll put a dishtowel or something over my buckle to protect my resonators.

Thanks for the feedback. I think I'll leave it for now rather than risk further damaged. It definitely looks played now!
