Fretwork

From dizzo on 6/27/2014 5:46:15 AM

Just got a bellflower. Blows my mind how nice it is.

It has a flat spot or 2 on a few frets. It causes a slight buzz in one spot. Not sure if it needs a crowning or a partial refret. Would this be a job any decent luthier could be trusted with or should I have the Geoff take care of it?

I would think any good banjo luthier could take care of that. Ask your question in the 'banjo repair' forum and let folks know where you live. If anyone is close they will probably tell you.

I agree, any decent luthier. Here's the thing, if it's buzzing against fret 5, either fret five is too high, or more likely, fret 4 wore down too low. The trick is to fix this while taking minimum metal off the frets, and then recrowning whichever frets had to be leveled.

Be careful, I had a luthier that claimed my neck was warped. - it wasn't

Dizzo,
I've had to redo many a poor fret job, so be careful and be sure the luthier you choose has done epoxied-in frets, or you'll have an unhappy luthier and probably a mess to clean up. Cleaning out the old epoxy and doing the proper prep work is the hardest part. We charge $375 for all new frest and a new compensated nut. That's also tricky.

That was "all new frets", not frest. Sorry. If the nut is not properly compensated, the banjo will not play in tune when fretted....

I've been doing some research and thinking about it and have decided there is no reason to take chances with my precious. I'll be contacting you when the time comes Geoff. Thanks.

Does stelling offer stainless frets?
What would be the expected turn around time?
