Well I'm wondering what I should do. My '77 Golden Cross that I bought new is showing some heavy "checking". Is a refinish in order?

I say if it hinders the playability in any way or is unsightly, refinish or at least do an overspray to smooth out any rough areas. If it was a prewar Martin or Gibson 5 string I'd defer to George Gruhn and/or Jim Mills. When you're talking about 10's of 1000's of dollars, a refinish could cost you a lot.

And Geoff, I still love my banjo and it seems a lifetime since the day I bought it from you. It hasn't gotten much playing time since the 90's, but now I'm retired and will find plenty of time to get the fingers working again. :O)
