I have a 1978 Golden Cross that I purchased used a few months ago. I have an 1980 Ode 6500 D, 1993 Gibson RB 4 and 1929 TB 4. The Golden Cross is by far the best of them. I'm thinking about switching to the Tony Pass Rim. What wood would be used in the present rim and what is the TP Rim made of?

	smithbanjo says: 5/21/2014 7:51:40 AM Kerry: I purchased a Marteka Challenge Deluxe from Geoff last month and it's a killer in looks and tone. The TP rims were made from old recovered wood but I don't know if he still does. Call or mail Geoff.
	Geoff Stelling says: 5/21/2014 11:00:01 AM Kerry, The 1978 rims were probably maple block rims that could have been up to 7/8" thick. My records are a bit scattered and there were many changes being made between 1976 and 1979. For sure, your tone ring is thicker in the middle and was a 45 degree equalateral triangle in shape, the heaviest we made. We changed to a narrower lighter ring in June of 1979 which is the same shape we use today and it will fit the TS600 Pass rim. The older tone ring will not fit our new rims. A special rim would have to be made. Best wishes, Geoff
Kerry1 says: 5/21/2014 5:26:04 PM Thanks Geoff for pitching in. I'm getting cold feet now about changing everything out. I may want to keep Golden Cross all original. It is a heavy brute though. I do like the sound of it and I do get compliments from people saying "that's a nice sounding banjo". Maybe I should unload one of my other banjos like the Gibson RB 4 and pursue and new Stelling. Still wavering.
