How do you guys think your Mastertone/Masterclones compare to your Stellings? Similarities, differences, likes, dislikes?

I have 2 Gibson copies (a flat head and an archtop) and a Red Fox Stelling. I play the flathead copy quite a bit, but the arch-top seldom gets played. The Red Fox is definitely my main axe though. Now when I get the new V 35 Sullivan in, it may get interesting. :)

I have a 1988 ESS and a Stelling Masters Cross just purchased . I played my ESS this past weekend at a jam session, and couldn't wait to get my hands on the Stelling again.

Hey Poppa - amazing coincidence. I have an '03 Masters Cross and an '09 ESS that I found in a guitar shop in 2011. Dusty but brand new. What a deal. I like both but the Stelling walnut has that sweetness about it that is special. I wouldn't part with either one.

I love the sound of my Stelling Master's Cross. I had a ESS Master tone and sold if after it sat in the closet for a couple of years. To my ears there is no comparison, the Stelling out shines the Mastertone by a large margin. Remember this is to my ears, some like the mellower tone of the Gibson. It's not for me I love the snap of a Stelling.

I, too, have a 1988 (if I recall) Earl Scruggs Standard along with a Red Fox. The reason I haven't sold the ESS is because I treasure the Earl Scruggs signature inside the rim. My ESS stays in the case for the most part. I bring it out on occasion for nostalgia sake.
The ESS does sound very, very good. But I prefer the feel of the Stelling neck.

What surprised me about the Masters Cross was that it had so much crackle and brightness for a walnut. Not as bright but brighter than other walnuts I have heard. I think it has to do with Geoff's great engineering of the tone ring combined with the Pass block rim. Love it.

I have a Staghorn as well as a converted TB3. Two completely different banjos! And I love them both. Depending on the tune played, they both have their shinning points. Bluegrass is a little brighter on the Gibson, but the Staghorn really shines when playing some more mellow tunes. I think I'll be keeping them both for a long time!

I'm lucky enough to own a Swallowtail and a Huber VRB-75. I love them both. Both play beautifully. I've owned many postwar Gibsons and several Hubers, but this is (for some reason) my first Stelling. And I'm a huge Alan Munde fan... This is a great banjo, and I'm definitely hooked now. Wish I had four arms and could play them both at once.
