Stelling weight loss surgery

From bnjoplr on 6/14/2013 10:19:29 PM

My banjo...NOT Geoff or Sherri!

I've been battling a debilitating staph infection and haven't touched a banjo in at least a year. I'm much stronger and want to start playing again. I have the last Carolinian Geoff built, I brought it downstairs and could barely lift it out of the case. So, I emailed Geoff a few weeks ago about either selling it or making it lighter. He wrote back that he could install a TP rim and I had four options for tone rings. Archtop, wooden, hoop, or a new carbon fiber ring. He hadn't received the latter yet.

I opted for the carbon fiber. It weighs probably less than half a frisbee. I drove down today, Geoff did the deed, cleaned up the frets, sold me a new TP rim and the carbon fiber ring. He reassembled and put strings on it, and tuned it up. After he picked a few licks, he looked at me and we both said 'it sounds like a banjo!' I think we both had concerns that it might not have sustain, but mine definitely does. It has a slightly sweet tone and plenty of Stelling kick butt sound. Very nice and simply amazing!

The banjo pops, and now weighs a bit over 8 1/2 lbs, which is easily 3 lbs less than its former weight. I smiled all the way home. :-)

Contact Geoff if you're also interested in the new Stelling weight loss surgery. As they say, not cheap but worth it!

Post a recording if you can....sounds very interesting!

That's going to be difficult to do. My desktop is toast and I'm working off tablets right now. I'll see what I can do. That said, Geoff is VERY fussy and proud of his banjos. If this conversion put a smile on his face, which it did, you have to believe that it sounds great.

It would have been good if Geoff had made a sound file to post. Maybe next time.

I'll try, but sound posts are subjective and dependent on the recording equipment. Mine is very limited right now. Again, if the sound brings a smile to Geoff, it's good. We were in his shop which I don't think is set up for recording anything. It's a workshop.

How would you compare the sound to the way it was before conversion? Brighter?? How does the low end sound?

I'll play it later today. Doing chores. It's got low end growl, very nice tone, and sustain.

I went from a standard Stelling rim from when the banjo was made to a TP, so there's going to be a difference. The huge part is the tone ring weight delivering the same sound as before. Make sense?

Thanks for posting this. So often you hear about people looking for lighter banjos, because of accidents, back problems, age, etc. This is great to know.

As most know, Geoff is particular about his banjos. I knew it sounded good, but to see him smile after he string it up was super.

It's really great to have an alternative.
