This is my head.....

From Porschefan on 4/10/2013 11:15:22 AM

I'm ordering some stuff from the Stelling website, including a replacement head.   I'm wondering if I should get a bridge also.   I was going to post a pictgure of what appears to be the head I have from the Elderly instruments website, but I guess you can't post pix in a blog entry (??). It's described as a "Shiny black high-crown" and it has the Deering logo on it and it looks just like mine.

The bridge doesn't have a name on it, but the front side has a brand of a scorpion.   The back side has what look to be pencil mark lettering: "J D M C" -- but I could be entirely wrong about that.

I measured the the bridge and it appears to be about 1/32" over 5/8", but not quite 11/16".   [Edit: I found the website of the bridge maker and it is a Scorpion and they make 21/32" bridges, which is, duh, 1/32" more than 5/8" and 1/32" less than 11/16ths. ]

I think that my first setup try should be to return it to it's original specs which I understand to be the Ludwig medium-crown head and Stelling 5/8" bridge, but not sure about the bridge?

TIA for any advice.

STP

I would go with the Ludwig head, but unless you action is too high, I think you will need a 11/16 bridge, since they are standard on Stelling banjos. a 5/8 bridge could cause your banjo to buzz. Sounds like you have a Scorpion bridge and it may be fine unless it is sagging in the middle. They are usually good bridges.

I think you will probably need a medium crown for the best results, but that's just an oppinion.

I think you're right joemac! I meant to mention that also, but forgot it.

RE the medium crown head--that's what the standard Ludwig head on the Stelling site is.

I did some more research here on BHO and found that the writing on the back of the bridge IS "JDMC" - for Janet Davis Music Company - one of the dealers that carries th the Scorpion line of bridges. They are made by a Silvio Ferretti and seem to be a well regarded, high-quality bridge.
