Preferred Bridge

From kmwaters on 4/7/2013 7:09:15 AM

Hi Geoff:  Recently acquired a Masters Cross.  Love it.  I have a pretty nice Steve Davis compensated bridge on there and the banjo sounds really good.  But I was curious to know if there is a "preferred" bridge for this model.  No disrespect to the Stelling bridges of course.  Thanks.

Stellings have a compensated nut. Why would you need a compensated bridge?

Good point. I was not aware. But the bridge sounds good! Not sure about pulling it for something different at this time. All strings sound perfect one octave up.

If it sounds good, I can't blame you. I have the original on my Sunflower. Have a Sosebee on my Fender. I like them both pretty well.

I like Sosebee too. Have one on my other Banjo - Gibson ESS. I think there are some special bridge makers that just seem to turn out better ones.

KM,
Depending on the intonation issues, I have combined a compensated bridge with the compensated nut, but generally with older Stellings that had a shorter scale and the compensation was affected by that. Most "compensated" bridges on the market focus mainly on the third string and ignore the second. What does the Davis bridge do?

Steve's bridge has the 3rd furthest from the nut of course, but then he also has mild compensation in that 2 and 4 are slightly closer to the nut than 1 and 5. But it is really small. Frankly I cannot tell if I have a compensated nut or not. I have looked at it under a magnifier and it does appear that contact points within the notches are a little different but I cannot be positive.
