I've had my Stelling Red Fox for about a week. Why did I wait so long?!!
Without a doubt, this is the best neck I ever have played on. That is, the best since I had a Stelling Moonflower a looongggg time ago. The Moonflower was made for only a short period. I should have kept it, but I wasn't playing very much then, and was displeased that the beautiful maple neck wood was hidden under a very dark stain.
The Red Fox has been on my dream list ever since I started playing again after a 12 year layoff. It reminds me of the 15 years we lived in Virginia, near Charlottesville. That is only the start of my joy with the instrument. I haven't modified anything yet, not even changing the strings, and the sound is fabulous. Pull-offs, push-offs and hammer-ons and slides are cleaner on the Red Fox than they are on my Gibson Earl Scruggs Standard, and that banjo is no loser. There is no comparison between the Red Fox and my mid-1990s Rich & Taylor J.D. Crowe model. The R&T sounds fine, but without the projection of the Stelling. The Red Fox, for some reason, plays so much more easily.
Enough gabbing. I need to go get my Red Fox fix and play a bit.
