Better than Santa Claus

From donthacker on 1/2/2013 12:13:44 PM

I picked up my pride & joy today. I bought a 79 Whitestar several months back that had neck issues. Stelling, for a very reasonable fee, fixed it and then some. Playing it is like ticklin' a pretty girl and it is exactly the banjo I had been searching around for.

I wanted a maple Stelling and I liked the simpler inlays. Plus, I could get it for the total price I was looking for. It felt like a gamble, buying a problematic banjo and getting it repaired. But working with the great folks at Stelling and Banjo.com put me in good hands and it paid off. Stelling's dedication to his product is incredible and rare these days. Thanks Geoff!  You have another lifelong fan.

Congratulations and enjoy! Pictures and a sound post would be great as well as a more thorough description of your neck problems and repair.

Will do.

The neck was one that had the ebanol issue that has been discussed on many posts here on BHO, and it appears that it sat unused for a long time after it happened, or happened because it sat unused, and no telling what conditions it was subjected to. Stelling put an ebony fretboard and a new nut on it . I don't think he had to do anything to the neck itself. The nickel was all tarnished, and they cleaned that up. It looks brand new now, with just a few minor spots of wear that you can't really fix. I couldn't put it down last night. The intonation up the neck is awesome, and the fourth string is very meaty.

Yeah, the intonation up the neck is awesome. I have a 79 Bellflower with the ebanol neck and have had no problems.

I'm glad that Don's '79 Whitestar turned out so nicely and that Ken's Bellflower with ebonol has not been a problem. Like I have said before, if the supplier of the ebonol had been consistent, none of this would have been an issue. "All's well that ends well."

Maple Whitestars are superb, like every Stelling. You'll love that banjo. Geoff, my strings arrived today, many thanks for the note ! I'm keeping that !

Geoff, I'm sure you've grown tired of explaining the ebanol situation after all these years. Mine has to be one of the last, and I know it went unplayed for a long, long time.

It's perfect now and has indeed ended well.

Don
