Stelling Convert

From banjoez on 12/25/2012 7:10:52 AM

Decided to join the Stelling Owners Group as I recently purchased a 2006 Sunflower that has really changed my mind on Stellings. I have always been  a Gibson/Gibson clone enthusiast.

I bought this Stelling to try something different and to see how they have evolved compared to the earlier ones which  I found in the past to be a bit harsh sounding to my ear. Loud but without a lot of depth. Well, this particular Stelling has changed my mind and has become one of my all time favorites.  It has a full rich tone that is very reminiscent of some of the best old flatheads but with more volume. A clear, balanced tone across all strings up and down the neck and a nice deep growl with just enough sustain. Not too much, not too little. The 4th string is amazing. The sound is produced effortlessly without having to dig for it like you usually do with a Mastertone.

In conclusion, a Stelling with a Tony Pass rim can produce the kind of powerful tone that any prewar enthusiast would be happy with. Definitely a special instrument.

I have a Sunflower and my poor RB-3 has not been out of the case more than once or twice since.

Over the past 20 years or so, I also had mainly Gibsons and some great ones. My last Gibson was an RB12. I now have a 1988 Maple Whitestar ( 3 ply rim ) and not only is it a beautiful instrument, it sounds out of this World. Simply stellar !

I once owned a Gibson-made Epiphone that had a 19 hole tonering, most likely made before 1945 or prewar. It was the best sounding banjo I had ever owned until I started playing a Stelling. I never went back and sold that banjo for a lot less than what it was probably worth. That was in 1975. Yes, I was a Gibson fan long before I made banjos. It was the Gibson pot that drove me to create one better. I'm glad that many of you feel the same way I do and I appreciate your remarks.
All the best and Merry Christmas.
Geoff

Geoff, The last thing I needed was another banjo when my daughter and I drove up from Nashville this time last year. But when we stopped in Staunton, Va for a break and I saw the Sunflower hanging on the wall at Fretwell I had to try it out. It was pleasure to look at, and I loved the way it played and sounded. I let my daughter drive the rest of the way while I played it in the truck nearly all the way back to NY.

I bought my Stelling Red Fox new in 1994 from Dalton Brille in Winchester Virginia and must say it was probably the best purchase I have ever made. Although I have a few other good banjos ( 2 Gibsons and a nice Fender Artist) nothing compares to the sound and playability of my Stelling. I sent the banjo back to Geoff a few years ago for frett replacements, head replacement and a thorough cleaning and had it back within eight days. Not only is this a fine instrument but, I have received nothing but first class service from Geoff and his company.

Just got back from a road-trip with my Daughter. We stopped in Fretwell Base of Staunton, VA on the way up from Nashville. This is where I got my Sunflower this time of year in 2011. Jerry said it took them an entire years to replace the banjo, and they finally got a new Red Fox in. It's a beautiful instrument, and I resisted the temptation to take it home! Was able to play one tune with Jerry and Ted Lawhorne, and bought one of the 100 Proof CD's they produced with Randy Edwards, BobbyArbaugh, Danny Lam, and Rusty Vint. Great music, guys, and the vocals were amazing.

Harry. You got so close to visiting Geoff Stelling and didn't?

It was tough to fit everything in. Next trip will include a visit.
