original rim or Pass rim?

From Cotten Patch Rag on 1/31/2011 8:33:15 AM

I recently purchased a 1980 Staghorn.  I am wondering if it is a no-brainer now to have a Pass ring installed.  Can't imagine the sound could get any better than it is now.  Also, would this be a drop-in, or would the banjo need to be altered?  Any thoughts on this guys?  Jim

I'm with 5 String. I don't think you'll notice more difference in tone vs the cost to install a TP rim especially in a well seasoned Staghorn. I've played many many Stelling models with and without TP rims and they all sound great but not that much different in tone. The TPs do lessen the overall weight some, by maybe 2 pounds or so.

leave it the way it is, there is not that much of a difference.

I don't know what rim is in mine. I like it the way it is an' I ain't gonna mess with it. What Geoff put together, let no tinkerin' man alter.

@CurtissWhite. It's easy to see if it is a Tony Pass rim. Remove the resonator and look at the bottom edge of the rim. Tony Pass engraves his name on his rims!

Jimmy I currently have Pass Rims in both of my Stellings. Why? Because they were installed in them when they arrived at the front door.
I've owned both Pass and pre-Pass. The only slight difference is sustain.

I've got a reg rim laying around the house for a spare and have never attempted to install it in place of the Pass Rims in my current banjo. I thought about selling it but I was afraid in might in up in a Stelling Clone configuration so..........no go!

I've got a 1988 Golden Cross with the original 3 ply rim and have no intention of changing it. The banjo gives me everything I could want and more. I figure, if it isn't broken, don't try to fix it.
