Essential tools list

From Patanio on 5/6/2012 4:50:47 PM

Well, I realize that I will need to tighten the head, and hooks and other cool banjo stuff. Is there a list of necessary hardware, or does Geoff have a handy Stelling kit?

As far as I know all you need is a bracket wrench which if you don' t have one in your banjo case you can get from Geoff or 1st Quality or any music store that sells good banjos. Hopefully you won't need to get into truss rod adjustments which will require a small screwdriver and a special wrench for the truss rod.

You also need a 1/2" open end wrench and a small screwdriver (or a large nail) to adjust the action. I recommend that you get the Stelling Field Service manual and read it over carefully before adjusting anything. You can get most of the needed information online, but I found it handy to have a concise printout all in one place, and specific to Stelling. If you need to mess with the truss rod (not likely, and don't do it if you don't know what you are doing), you need a 1/4" nut driver.

Believe me, I don't want to mess with it at all. I just need to be able to adjust the head.

Rick,
A 1/4" nut driver, 1/2" open end wrench, small phillips head screwdriver, small flathead screwdriver, and a 5/64" allen wrench are all you need to make every adjustment possible on a Stelling. The nut driver is supplied with all new Stellings. The truss rod is the least adjusted part of the banjo for most people and it can cause the most serious playability problems if neglected, which most people do. The Field Service Manual covers all that and I encourage people to learn all the set up techniques that are mentioned in it. One professional set up can cost upwards of $75 if you go to a music store. No telling what kind of set up you'll get, either. Please check out my set up hints on my website, too. Best of luck.

Hi Geoff - Would your above tool recommendations be the same for my 1990 Sunflower? Thanks, Bill (PS After these 22 years, I'm still super-happy with the banjo.)
