Larry Wallace Stelling Setup Tips

From Eastbanjo on 12/25/2011 1:32:23 PM

Larry Wallace was kind enough to pass the following: quote: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- My Stelling has been a good banjo and I think it gets better everyday. Bill Emerson has good ideas about set-up and I have had several conversations with him about Stelling and Gibson adjustments. The Stelling will NOT set up like a Gibson. Two different designs entirely. They just both "look" like a banjo. The set-ups are different. A Ludwig head works best on the Stelling. I use one exclusively on my Stelling It has to be pretty tight for that wedge-fit pot design. Emerson told me the "tailpiece trick". Turn the outside 2 (of the 5) screws, that the strings are attached to, just about all the way in. Get the tailpiece at least even with the armrest, away from the hoop. This will get the tailpiece as far as possible away from the hoop and it will get the bridge-side of the tailpiece away from the bridge. Get the tailpiece up to where it is just about parallel to the head. Not too low and not too high. Straight in line with the head. This will give a "just right" downward tension on the strings. You should hear a difference in volume and you will get a more mellow tone. The banjo will "open up" and ring, with just the right tone. And the volume will increase. This really worked on mine. A big difference was noticed.

I'll try it. Should increase sustain.

I tried the tailpiece suggestion last night just to see. I cant say it increased volume, but it did add ALOT of sustain. I dont know if I'm gonna like that or not. I'm gonna pick on it a few days and see if it grows on me.

Just an update. I made the adjustments mentioned above and tweaked the head about a wk ago. It was different at first and I wasnt sure how I would like it. After everything settled in including my ear, I have decided to leave it. The Virginian has a fuller sound, and I get a wider tone range between the x nd y positions. I use a Stelling bridge, head, and medium Stelling strings.
