My earliest block rims were maple. There were some 12 ply beech rims and some odd ball 6 ply maple rims that I put together out of two halves for only a few banjos in the "70's. I then went to birch block rims from April 1980 till Nov. 1981 when I switched partly to Stew-Mac 3 ply maple rims. After June of 1982, I used 3 ply maple till I switched to the Tony Pass rims after 2001. The really thick block rims were all maple in the late '70's. The early, pre 1980, 3/4" block rims were maple. I can generally tell the difference by looking at them. Geoff
