When I bought my Sunflower in '05, ( a 2004 model) I went straight to the heaviest strings I could find 'cause that's what I use on my guitar. I worked with a teacher who used really, really light strings so I went with those. But I'm a big guy, pretty heavy handed and found it very difficult to keep in tune. So I've gone back to the medium/heavy strings, heavier pick gages and am totally pleased with what I've got going. As I've gained some facility, I find that with heavier strings, there is more available to dig into when I want "big" and I can cultivate a light touch when needed. The real deal I think is that I just play all the time, which the banjo LOVES... also I'm gaining confidence ( only been playing Banjo for about 7+ years) and just love the sound I'm getting. One last thing, I was at a banjo camp this summer and the teacher had an incredible pre-war Gibson that just growled from top note to the bottom. I sat pretty close and in front and was blown away. Of course, I needed to "do something" to get that sound, but the teacher reminded me that what we hear when we play is different than what others hear. especially with Banjos...(and He loved my Stelling's sound). Somehow, hearing that, helped me to let go of all the concern about tone envy and focus on my playing.
