I have 2002 Red Fox and 2007 Swallowtail. Both are maple banjos. However, the Fox has developed a nice warm "woody" sound which I really like. It has the original Pass rim. The Swallowtail, though a bit louder, doesn't sound quite as warm and woody. The difference in tone would probably be imperceptible to most, but I hear it. The '07 has the Pass thin skirt rim. I've played the Fox much more than the Swallowtail.

I'm wondering whether the newer Swallowtail will eventually develop this warmer tone--or are the rims making the difference. Any comments? What do owners of the original Pass rim Stellings have to say about the sound of their banjos?

	Old Man says: 7/25/2011 2:43:38 PM I believe your Fox has a cooperman rim,.I have owned a Stelling sonflower with the Thin skirt Rim and a Masterflower with the cooperman rim and Both were powerful banjos but the Masterflower is far more the best.
	thombanjo says: 7/25/2011 6:44:10 PM Not sure about the 2002 Red Fox's rim ? Mine is a 2003 and it has the Cooperman rim. It has a warm, sweet sound that gets lots of compliments when folks here it live and on recordings as well. I didn't know that 2002 s had a block rim ?
	Cornflake says: 7/25/2011 6:50:01 PM I ordered the block rim as an option. This was at a time before it was the standard rim. Within a year Stelling made it the standard rim, and within a couple of years they switched to the thin skirt. I'm guessing the original Pass rim was only standard for about three years.
	Geoff Stelling says: 7/26/2011 7:38:08 AM Some Pass rims, the 3/4" originals that had Lost Forest on the bottom, were put into a few banjos in 2001 and 2002 and early to mid 2003. I have them listed by serial number in a book. It's not a list that I can publish at the moment. Some day I guess I'll do that. Meanwhile, just let me know the serial number and I'll tell you what rim was in it at completion. Geoff
	Geoff Stelling says: 7/26/2011 7:40:48 AM All rims get better with age and playing time. I have a 3/4" LF rim in my MasterFlower and it gets played more than my Master's Cross Deluxe which has a TS600 and it does sound better to my ear than the MCD. But I play it more. Geoff
