Accessories for New Stelling

From Crabgrass on 7/21/2011 8:40:18 AM

Now that I am a new Stelling owner, I need a capo and strap for it.  I currently use a Sully strap which a like a lot, but it is not a cradle strap, and I'm not sure I should hang this banjo from the brackets??  Any recommendations for a capo or strap would be appreciated.  Thanks

Well, a good old Shubb has worked well for me for almost 30 years. ;-) I tried a Paige (great capo) but the Stelling heel and peghead design means that you can't store it up past the nut which takes aways one of the best features of that capo.

As for a strap, I'm partial to the buffalo hide ones from Lakota Leathers. The sell here, too.

Congrats on the Stelling!

I like the Ultimate Capo from Janet Davis Music. It's a brass, screw type. It maintains a nice full -not pinched tone even up the neck. I like the tone on my recordings with it on my Red Fox. I think it was around 30.00 maybe 25.00. I don't worry about storage issue

Is it true for all capos that you can't store them above the nut on Stellings, or is it just the Paige?

correction...34.95 for the Ultimate Capo

Thomas - I see that the Ultimate has an open side. Are you able to store it above the nut?

I use a Paige capo and an old McKinney capo, both of which I store above the nut. On some very early Stellings, the volute was cut too close to the nut and capo storage was hampered by that. It should not be an issue on anything made since 1978.

Thanks Geoff, also is there any issue with using a strap that attaches to the brackets?

Hmmm. Not an issue with later model Stellings? I had a 1977 Golden Cross when I tried this. I now have a 2005 Staghorn. Maybe I should try again?

I have used a G7th Performance capo for a couple of years with no issues. I store it at the end when not in use.

I have used a Huber strap for three years now and wouldn't mind finding something a little wider at the shoulder to support the weight.
