Banjo strap and Stelling Hardshell case

From bigguitarbrad on 4/18/2011 8:30:59 PM

Is there a high quality leather strap out there that is suitable for quick putting on and taking off the banjo? The way I operate now, is I have to untie every time I use the hardshell case. When time is an issue (like not wanting to miss out on a good jam) I long for something quicker and easier. Thanks, Brad

I have the strap Stelling sells and quite like it. I don't disconnect it when putting it in it's case though. After some experimentation I figured out how it all fits in neatly and quickly.
Hold banjo horizontally and let strap hang down from the brackets. (I use 2nd below heel and 1st above tailpiece) Wrap strap around banjo starting from heel end. It will fold in half at some stage and the return part runs back to the tailpiece end under the other layer. This means the entire strap is wrapped around the thinner part of the banjo (not the resonator part) with no twists - just one fold. If you have the strap a lot longer to accommodate your own personal circumference (!) there would be more strap to tuck away.
I find this method of strap storage quick and simple.

I just had this same discussion with Pat Sullivan at Sully's Straps. I sling over my right shoulder (ala Scruggs), so have less strap to pack away, and still was having trouble getting the strap into my generic case. After a bit of experimentation, I found a way to get it in there. I'll send you a picture.

I highly recommend his straps BTW. No metal or plastic hardware at all to scratch.

I've been using a padded strap slung over my left side (longer strap) for many years and have packed it into my case. I don't have a picture of it but I do have a picture of another banjo of mine with a non-padded strap that fits in the case the same way. It is attached to the banjo all the time. It's just the way it is folded around the body and sits on top of the flange...not around the resonator. Take a look at my site. There are two pics-one with the strap across the body and another packed into the case. Although it helps to have a strap that is well broken in and not padded, I did it this way with my new-padded strap years ago. Good luck.

Please don't mind the RB4 that is attached to the strap. I also have a Golden Cross and Bell Flower in my pedigree. Enjoy 'em all.

The Huber straps are thin enough to fit in the case with no pressure. Just double it back and wrap it around the rim. It sits on top of the flange and comes just up to the top of the tension hoop.

My strap just DIDN'T fit in the Calton case. Now I've had ways to fit the strap into other cases (over 20 years of playing), so the "you can do it this way" suggestions really won't apply too well.

As a result, I needed a quick way to remove the strap, roll it up, and store it just behind the accessories box in the case. I found the Super Strap (janetdavismusic.com/supstr.html) fit the bill nicely. It has the military quick connect/disconnect system. I've now been using this for the past several years. The only downside is that it is NOT leather.

Pick that Stelling!

Chris
