I just purchased a used Stelling Whitestar from another Hangout member, and it arrived by UPS today. For packing, the seller laid the bridge flat under the strings. This is my first banjo upgrade, and I never tinkered much with my old banjo, other than replacing strings. As a result, I don't know how to get the bridge back into the correct position. How do I go about getting the bridge back into the correct position? Thanks in advance!

The Stelling site is probably the better place to look, but check out several. You probably should understand compensation. For exact setup, the string lengths of the various strings on a guitar or banjo are not exactly the same, because the frequency of a string depends just a little on diameter. Consequently, many banjo bridges are "compensated," meaning the grooves are carved out a little, differently for each string. This corrects for the above-mentioned effect. Stellings are compensated at the nut, so if you get another bridge, get an uncompensated one. On a Stelling, the bridge is pretty much perpendicular to the strings; on some other instruments it sets up at a slight angle.

All Stellings with the compensated nut have the bridge at 13 3/16" from the 12th fret as measured from the top center of the fret to the top center of the bridge with the feet flat on the head and parallel to the frets. The Stelling logo faces the neck.

Geoff, since my first Stelling is for delivery tomorrow it is really nice to see you reply personally to this question. In today's world it's unusual to see that kind if concern for customers. Don't know how I'm going to stand it for 2 more days. Haven't been this excited in a while.

I too want to add that I have been VERY impressed by Stelling's customer service! Geoff has answered a couple of questions for me, both on here and in response to email directly to Stelling. And, I only bought a used Stelling. If the service is that good with respect to someone buying a used Stelling, I can only imagine how good it is for someone lucky enough to be purchasing a new banjo from Stelling. That kind of customer service is what keeps people coming back, and what leads to super "word of mouth" recommendations.

Mine is used also but before buying I was able to talk to Geoff and was amazed first of all that he personally answered the phone and then took time to discuss things with me, knowing I was looking seriously at a used banjo. All that tells me is that he takes lots of pride in his instruments. After that short conversation I knew what brand my money was going for. About 30 more long hours until the case opens.
