When did Bill quit playing his Stelling, and WHY? I noticed on some videos that it wasn't a Stelling and it really shocked me! He has played a Stelling for years and it made me curious as to when he switched to something else and why. Anybody got the scoop?

	Z Daniels says: 3/22/2011 6:34:18 PM I don't know the scoop but my best guess would be that he has several banjos and may like each banjo for its specific qualities. I don't use my Stelling for every occasion. I use it when I want that Stelling sound (which happens to be most of the time). Mostly in an acoustic setting, or with a band that has no drums, or when I'm using an in-ear monitor rig. When there are drums present on the stage, or if the band I'm playing with has a really loud stage volume whether it be because of monitors, or amps, I might use something else. Its either that, or I stuff my Stelling with a t-shirt, which I HATE doing! The idea of binding and gagging the Stelling does ring well with me-pun intended. My point is- is that while I would rather not have to use anything but my Stelling, there are some cases where I will use a different banjo for the circumstantial reasons said above. I have a feeling Bill still has, loves, and plays his Stelling at gigs. At least I'd like to think so. This is my guess and I would also like to know the scoop if someone's got it.

As you can imagine, Bill owns a number of banjos and likes to play them all now and then. He acquired a few new banjos over the last few years that were probably given to him and he had some obligation to play them and said he was quite happy with the arrangements he had with everybody, including me. Recently he requested that I make him a slightly shorter tailpiece for his Bill Emerson Red Fox Deluxe. He was so enthusiastic about it that he assured me that it would be on his next recording project. We'll see. Geoff
