Stelling pip?

From Waltraud on 9/15/2022 2:26:07 PM

I have an 88 whitestar with a spike behind the 5th fret. If I wanted to replace with a bone pip inline with the (shortened) fret is that acceptable/ a good idea?

The spike is the best way to go, play the banjo and enjoy it. Mr. Stelling put the spike there for a reason. Also banjo value will be more if you leave it as is. I have repaired more broken pips than loose spikes. I love a Stelling.

Unless original equipment, and properly placed to compensate for spikes, (seldom are) I am not a big fan of pips.
Your present setup works reasonably well. With a compensated bridge & a little tweaking, even better.

Thanks both, compensation in terms of bridge angle or a compensated bride ? I thought Stellings use a compensated nut which is an alternative to a compensated bridge?

Hi again Tim, you cannot use a comp bridge on your Stelling. My advice is if you require a new nut, have a new compensated nut fitted. If it plays fine, I would leave it alone. Give me a holler if you have any set up questions. Cheers.

Waltaud,
Stanley Legend is correct. The Pip was initiated many years ago to help with the intonation when capoing the fifth string under RR spikes that tended to sharpen the string because of the tension caused by using the RR spike. The Pips have been positioned slightly ahead of the 5th fret (uphill from the nut) to allow for string tension amplification when using the spikes. For all practical purposes, it works very well. The RR spike works very well for those who fret the fifth string in open tuning. It's very common to have to retune the fifth string when using spikes no matter what system you have.
Best regards, Geoff

Sorry for the misspelling of Waltraud.
Best, Geoff

Thanks Geoff, Waltraud is a nickname after my Austrian aunt, real name Tim. I'm going to play it as it is and see how I get on. I'm used to playing prewars with a pip in front of the fret but I also like the look and sense of having a pip in line with the (shortened) 5th fret. I'm sure Prucha do that.

I do play some melodic stuff needing to fret the fifth string so ideally I keep the fifth string somewhere near the height of the others.

For the last 10 years or so, we have used the pip slightly upstream of the fifth fret. It has alleviated the need to retune the fifth string for the most part. We positioned it so that the pip was centered near the trailing edge of the fret. Best of luck.

Thanks Geoff,
So not inline with the 5th fret , above it on the fingerboard? Thanks
Tim

NB I've just played the Whitestar tonight ( night in the U.K.) and it rang out like a bright star. Thank you for your creativity and design of a truly great sounding banjo!
