Geoff's Staghorn Work

From gotvim72 on 7/31/2021 12:27:00 PM

My wife and I got the awesome opportunity to meet Geoff and checkout Stelling Banjo Works on my way home from a trip recently.

I posted a while back here about a neck issue where I wasn't getting enough relief (and other fret buzz issues) on my 97 Staghorn.

Geoff offered to help and at the time I couldn't part with it just yet. So I seized the opportunity recently while I was within driving distance.

I got it back the other day and boy did he fix it up! Heat treated the neck, I have plenty of relief now, New frets, new nut. Sounds amazing! Always sounded great, but I had couple annoying buzzes going on that were getting worse over the years since. Geoff noticed right away that indeed there was barely enough relief with the truss rod completely lose. Its a 25yr. old banjo so its possible it wasn't stored great or who knows prior to my ownership. But he fixed that right up. also noticed the frets were pretty worn and had been filed at least once. So new frets and nut were installed.

Just wanted to say thanks to Geoff and Stelling and what a pleasure it was to meet this legend. Couldn't have been a nicer, more humble guy on top of it!

Thanks again Geoff!

Also, I would love to post a couple pics from my meet with Geoff but I'm finding that near impossible on hangouts here :(

Nice story . Glad it all worked out for you. Nothing like a good set up on a Stelling banjo.

Geoff introduced some needed relief to my Staghorn neck at a Murphy Henry camp, where he was doing a setup demo. Adjusting the truss rod didn't seem to be having the needed effect, so he supported the neck under its heel and under the nut, and leaned heavily on the middle. Murphy shouted over the gasps of the students, "Don't worry, Craig, if he breaks it, he'll build you a new one!" It didn't break, it worked, and it left me with a better-playing banjo and a great story.

That's funny. Yeah, i saw him put some weight on the neck too when he was evaluating it and I was like, "okay, I think what I've done so far is safe". He knows it better than anyone. It was good to see his own faith in his choice of wood and construction first hand!
