Tailpiece/stretcher band question

Hi all

I just received a 1979 Superstar which I have had a close look at. Upon re-stringing, it appears the stretcher band has no indentations where the two outside adjusters seat ? The stretcher band looks exactly original to the banjo, can anyone advise ? Will I need to chase another stretcher band with the indentations ? I don't want the TP flying off...

	monstertone says: 3/3/2018 8:18:59 AM There is no need for indents in the tension hoop. (stretcher band) When you restring your banjo, if you do the third string first, it should come right down the centerline of the neck & pot. With only the third string installed, check to see it is centered on the neck where the neck & pot meet. If need be, gently push the bridge & tailpiece to one side or the other. The two outside adjusters align the tailpiece left to right. The lower screw adjusts the tailpiece angle which applies tension on the bridge. Basically, string tension holds the tailpiece in place. When changing strings, it is easier if you only do one string at a time. That way the bridge & tailpiece remain in place & eliminate the need of going through the process of adjusting either again. It also keeps tension on the neck, making tuning each string up to pitch easier than when the neck under tension from less than all five strings.

	Railo says: 3/5/2018 6:27:04 AM Congratulations on your new banjo. The early Stellings came with a Kershner tailpiece. The banjos that had them didn't require the indentations on the strecher band. It wasn't until somewhere around 1979 that the pivot pin tailpiece was introduced. According to the Stelling website the pivot pin tailpiece does require the two indentations to hold it in place. You can contact Stelling and I'm sure he can talk you through the process of retrofitting the tailpiece correctly. Good Luck!!
	Railo says: 3/5/2018 7:09:22 AM After re-reading my comment I realized i didn't make my point clear. Let me try again. The kershner tailpiece is held on by a screw through the flange and doesn't require indents. The stelling pivot pin does not have the screw through the flange and does require the indents to hold it in place. If your banjo does not have the indents in the strecher band then it would have originally had the kershner. If you have the stelling pivot pin tailpiece without the screw to hold it on then you will have to drill 2 indents to keep in in place.
