Archtop Stelling ?

From Ralph Stanley legend on 4/26/2017 1:41:02 PM

Anyone out there have a video they can post of their Archtop Stelling. I am a die hard Stanley fan considering the possibility of having a Raised head Stelling. Trouble is, I have no idea how different they sound to a Mastertone style Raised head.

Any advice greatly appreciated

Cheers

Dave

Dave,
We've made dozens of archtops over the years including a couple for Ralph Stanley. The last person I knew that had an archtop that would be recorded is Jim Pankey who may be a member of this forum. Brian Blaylock is the son of the late Clyde Blaylock who ran the Blaylock Music Store in Hixson, TN for decades. Brian still lives there but plays with the Crowe Bros. as far as I know. Blaylock Music bought mostly archtops and Brian surely would know who has recorded with them. I have one in my possession if you want to come to my shop to play it. Ralph liked his.

Hello Geoff,
Lovely to hear from you ! Many thanks for the info, I would love to pop into your shop and visit but living In England it's a bit of a trek, though I am planning a trip out to the states in the near future so I'll hold you to that !

Yes I am thinking of a Raised head Stelling, just searching the internet and found someone playing one and it sounds great, of course. I wonder if you know, Ralphs gospel LP recording from 1987 " I'll answer the call " I think he played his Stelling on that ? On the opening track his Banjo sounds very clear and bright, how I would expect a raised head Stelling to sound. I may be wrong...

Is it a direct change out for a Stelling to replace a flat head with a Raised head ? I'm not sure if I am looking at a new one or used...
Well, thank you again Geoff, I and a whole lot of others always appreciate all your precious time,
Best regards
David
