ive recently become disillusioned with the bluegrass association i belong to. as they claim to want to get "beginners" up to speed but yet i see no evidence that they really want to encourage beginners.. so im faced with the idea maybe i should give up this fantasy to play the banjo.. what are your thoughts

I understand how you feel.I am trying to learn the Tenor banjo and I feel like it is the black sheep at times. But I practice at least an hour or more a day. I am doing this for my fun if others can enjoy some of it that is even better. Still working on the 1st beginners book and it's been since October. Only stop if you are not having fun and learning. Best of luck Janie

Don't give up. While everyone says start jamming right away, I ask"how can you jam, when you really have no idea what you are doing?". If you can play rolls and chord, get yourself some of the beginner jam DVD's and just play. There are several good slow jam DVD's available from different instructors. They won't care if you are out of key, tune or time. Only you will know. Then when you are ready, go show those "beginners" how its done.

I feel cheated because i never belong to any kinda association . Well maybe that's why i'm having the time of my life with this banjo playing . Sounds like it might be music politics to me and think i would just ignore and maybe un join even . I "use" to go to a play along with about 15 profesional level guitar players but they are electric guitars also . Anyway due to slim pick'in around here i went for months and yes when it came my turn to play about half the folks would walk out of room .The other half did'nt mind . Hey did i mention the walk outs also hate banjo's and any bluegrass instruments also. Anyways this was a blow to my self confedence and pride but i put up with untill i found better things and now i don't have that exposure to that stuff often . It's part of the music Yo-yo and ya can't please everyone so don't try . Just keep pick'in and grin'in and thing will just start happening positive in your learning and playing and you won't see em coming . Take care my friend Scott Barn'billy

I don't know anything about tenor banjo so far and i could be playing that style and not even know what it's called . I play some 4 string roll stuff and some only melody playing stuff to but don't know if that's tenor stuff . Happy pick'in there Banjo Jane >>>>AKA >>Lamylouy

I don't do any rolls. Just pick with straight pick, and trying to get through my first book and learn mainly. The banjo I use is pictured, once in awhile I wish I had a 5 string there seems to be more things for it. Have not found many tabs for the Tenor.

Do what you ENJOY. So, if you enjoy playing with people, but not with those people, look for others.

Sounds like ya got all the good advice here on this thread already so i'll just say that i agree with everybody. Hey 'Banjo Jane' that's a neat moniker and a positive one. I'll bet you're a great mom so why put yourself down with the 'lousymom' handle. :)

Don't give up. People are strange. All of those people were beginners at some point. Banjo is not an easy instrument to play and I get frustrated at times. I took lessons for about a year and learned some great stuff, but still struggle with playing along with recordings and or other players. But I keep going because it's so much fun. Hang in there and don't let the snobs get you down!
