Alright here we go again, still no songs that sound like songs, made up some new licks 3132, got this one from Scott Hillbilly 3212, rolls that's all i am good at, don't know if i will ever pick it up,but I still get a kick out of practice, still try to boil them cabbage down and worried man, not dumb just slow slow slow, Hope you all have a very Merry Christmas, and a Happy New Year, i will if i can get my pop out of the hospital, seems like will be in at Christmas time . All i know to do is keep at it and maybe one day in the furture,I will be able to play this Banjo, and look back on all the hours I have put into it. oh here is a challenge for you all out there, if you know someone who wants to learn to play buy them a cheap banjo, to see if they can do it, the you will be leaving a legacy behind when you go! just cause I can't play doesn't mean someone else can't done it a couple of times already, a the fruit is bearing, Looking forward to speaking, to you all in the 2012 year , hang tough, laugh louder smile more, make someone happy, see ya around don thomas

Don, I like your attatude. That is what will keep you going.
Rolls are important, I know you want to play something, My suggestion is to get a Murphry Henry DVD. She teaches by ear. I think if you get one song under your belt it would help. I only know a couple of rolls and a couple of songs but it is enough to keep me comming back. Good luck and have a very merry Christmas.

I really like the rolls. Are you using a simplified version of Boil Them Cabbage? I really feel like I'm playing a song even though I know it's a super-simplified version. It's basically just the same roll over and over. I think we all see our progress differently. I know I'm slow, so I just do the exact same thing over and over and over and over and over and when I get it...real slow....I feel like I've really made progress.

You know I am poor for all the Banjo stuff i have , I have Murphry Henry dvd playing by ear, and i can get a little bit of it but she kinda drops off in some place, like should know where my fingers go, 3211231 thats my boil them cabbage down , is that the simple way or the hard way ,

Don I'm not sure of the finger placement you are talking about.
the Murphry Henry DVD i'm using is the one for beginners vol 1
it has four songs on it and as soon as I get the use of my hands back to normal(had carpel tunnel surgery) I will get started again. another good DVD is Ross Nickerson-Banjoteacher.com has some good stuff.

Ya don that's the easy version your doing and doing the chord changes . Do you got the harder version when you add the slides to it . Can send when ya want it . There are alot of versions of boil the cabbage out there also .

Thanks, I will try it out. I learned the song by ear and just do what I learned, I try not to over do it with music because I will confuse myself. I'm very easy to confuse.

me to, i am like that, i am very slow, i have been taking car eof my father at nite, and i have been able to play a little more so i am getting a little better, but on feb 23 i have been trying to play for a year and i still can't get any tunes like these people can on banjo hang out, scott barnbilly56 gave me a 3t 2i 1m 2i then go to 4t 2i 1m 2i then 5t 2i 1m 2i, over and over again, and jjust can connect it but am very slow and it doesn't sound like music, just a lot of notes, no g d7 just rolls, maybe by the time i get these rolls down fast i will be able to put some G's and some D7'si do put my fingers down on the strings, but my left hand shakes so bad, i willl probly in up just play straight G music ,they say it takes 5 years to become a pro at something, guess i got 4 years and one moth to go!!

I know what you mean, it has been 6 months since I have been able to pick an thing. Surgery on both arms and hands. No strength in eather hand yet and still have numbness in right hand. you said you have been doing rolls no cords. If you do all open strings you are doing a G cord and if you know the D7th add that to it. Then do your rolls with the C cord. I am doing my rolls and cords very, very slow and have to look at the finger positions to make sure I have them right, then do a roll a few times. It is going to be slow to get back where I was, like starting all over again. Hang in there it will come together soon.

Well I was making headway. I would guess intermediate level. Now I'm back to begginer as far as speed and accuracy is concerned. Still have some numbness in my right little finger which gives me some trouble and stamina in my arms is down to 15 to 20 minutes then I'm shot for a while.
