What kind of bridge are you using?

Tried the stock bridge, Snuffy Smith, and some other unknown. The Snuffy is a bit better but not much. I'm thinking the Elite head may be the answer, but I might lose too much of the highs. I may try it to see.

What did you do?

It was a matter of getting the tailpiece height juuuuust right, head slightly flat of G#. Snuffy 11/16" bridge, and medium strings. Plenty of power and full sound with plenty of pop! I may never go back to a heavy tone ring. haha

How much does the 25 weigh compared to a 35? I had someone tell me it was only a couple pounds lighter but I think he was sales pitching me, trying to talk me out of it. I was interested in getting a 25 for that purpose. I think you might have gotten one of the last ones for awhile too. Apparently they're on back order and not going to be available for several months. I've checked just about everywhere I can think of.

I haven't weighed it, but it is a VERY noticeable difference. A couple of pounds can be a lot when hanging on your shoulder for an hour or so. I've noticed that everyone seems to be sold out. I bought mine at Franklin Music in Roanoke Va. I don't think he had another one, but I don't know. He does have the Flinthill FHB-250, which is about the same thing. The FH is even lighter due to it being Mahogany. The FH fit and finish looked good (it's possibly prettier) but it needed some fret work, alas, I bought the RK. I've played a Rich & Taylor since 98 and I have to say, I love this RK!

Congrats on the new banjo and thanks for the info. I might get me one when they become available again. I think I heard on here somewhere that RK might be adding tone hoops to those 25's. Not sure if it's true or not. My 35 is awesome but I like the idea of having a similar player that weighs less to pick from time to time.

With my luck, now that I've bought this one, they'll add a tone hoop and Bowtie inlay. (Which I would've bought in a heartbeat)

Santa Rosa Music Center is Santa Rosa, CA has two RK-25's in stock. Their prices are really high, but they do take offers all the time. I bought an RK Dreadnaught guitar from them and talked them down to an appropriate price at about 55% of their tag price. Might give them a call if you are really looking for a 25. I think they are anxious to sell some banjos as they don't sell many banjos in Santa Rosa. They've been in stock for over a year, but in good shape. I was just there last week to buy a strap and was messing around with one. They do sound pretty good.

I've got an OT25 with a Renaissance head, A Kat Eyz Spice Pegged bridge, a no-knot tailpiece and Nylgut strings and you wouldn't believe how good it sounds.
The 25's are woodies and if you don't want that sort of sound then get a 35/36.

I love my RK-R25 as well, I have a 5/8 Sosebee bridge and use GHS PF-150 strings which have Phosphor Bronze wound 4th. I put the heavier, adjustable Presto on, and have the head right around G or G flat. What a great all around-all purpose banjo.
