Bridges?

From keroppilee on 4/17/2013 4:02:41 PM

What bridges do you guys recommend?

Somewhere down the line I think I'd like to upgrade from the stock rk-r35 bridge.

I am a beginner, but I have a Sosebee bridge on my R-35, and it seems to me a very bright sound that still holds up the low end. A friend of mine has a Gold Tone, and uses an Emerson power bridge. It sounds even more bright ,but could be the banjo setup. I think there are some really experienced players on this site that would have more insight than me. Also chec out the reviews.

I think I'd like a brighter sound vs the default bridge. What type of wood is your sosebee? Anyone have a recommendation for a brighter sound?

My bridge is the maple with ebony top. 5/8 with standard spacing. I lowered my tailpiece to about 1/4 inch and haven't done anything else to modify it . I love the sound. My other banjo is a mastercreaft maple with a small tone ring. I went with the Sosebee because it sounded really good on the much cheaper banjo.
Again, there are much more experienced pickers on this site who can tell you more details. I don't know what your budget is. The Soseby is about $20. A Snuffy Smith is probably a little more. The Emerson Power is about $30. Hope this has been some help

I was at Merlefest this weekend and met Tom Nechville. He did some tweaking of my RK-35 and put one of his compensated bridges on it. It seems to have helped . He is a member here so you might ask....

I have a Huber 5/8" standard on mine. I tried several but came back to the Huber. I had Richie Dotson set mine up and it sounds awesome. He actually raised the tailpiece. He's worked on several 35's and said that raising the tailpiece on the 35's tends to really open them up. I always thought the lower to the head the better but it definitely opened mine up. He also adjusted the nut slot angles and replaced the 5th string pip with bone. All I know is it went from being a very good sounding banjo to being the best sounding banjo I've ever owned... all the way up the neck.

I tried a lot of bridges on my Deco King and found the Elite bridge from Scott Zimmerman to best suit it by far

I just got a Snuffy Smith bridge today. Put it on my RK-36, and what a difference. I highly recommend it. Much clearer highs, and it helped the lows as well. I have discovered one thing recently, and that it how important it is to get the bridge in EXACTLY the right position. If you are as much as a 32nd of an inch off, one way or the other, it can make a huge difference. So keep fiddling with the position in extremely small increments until you hit the sweet spot. You will definitely know it when you get there. The banjo will ltell you in very clear terms.
