Hello To All

From Hello on 1/30/2021 1:52:07 PM

Decided to jump in and try to keep up with what is going on in the Recording King world.  I am a beginner, having only been playing for 8 months now, but an having a wonderful time.  Very shortly after taking up the banjo I traded the initial instrument for an upgrade that I feel is going to serve me very well for a long time.  I am the proud owner of an RK-36 and am very happy with this instrument and get a lot of compliments from others on it"s quality and sound.  I replaced the original strings with Huber Truetone Strings (10, 11, 12.5, 20 and 10) and have been very happy with their performance.

Wishing everyone well - be safe, stay healthy and play on.

Greetings Vince,
I also play a RK-R36. Great banjo that will last you many years. I upgraded mine with Gotoh tuning pegs and a matching Gotoh 5th string tuner (Gotoh comes standard top RK models).
I have been using GHS PF175 Medium Light Sonny Osborne Signature strings and the really give the R-36 a nice growl.
Sounds like your having a great time picking banjo. It’s great fun.
I also swapped to a Snuffy Smith bridge which (to my ear) gives a cleaner and more intense sound especially to the wound D string.
Keep on pick in’

Thanks for the response.
My RK-R36 was set up by the wonderful folks at Ciderville Music in Powell, TN, prior to shipping. It came with the stock tuners which I may change to the Gotoh, later, but have no problems with now, they tune and hold well for my style of playing They put on a 5/8" bridge and other than checking the head tension, I have had to do nothing else to it for set up. I am very happy with the string height and response. I did change to the lighter Huber Truetone Strings, as I mentioned. They have a good feel, a nice bright sound when played at the bridge but still mellow when played toward the neck. I'm glad you are enjoying yours and I couldn"t be happier with mine.
for me - Pickin' every day keeps the bad stuff at bay.

Well, I've been talking with some other players and my instructor about sound. (probably among the more "subjective" topics that can be found) After much discussion and research, I ordered a Huber, 5/8", standard spacing bridge. WOW!
After tuning and intonation adjustments, I was floored with the difference it made in my RK-36. Now, PLEASE don't get me wrong - There was nothing actually wrong with it before the change, I was simply looking for that something "more". Once properly placed and tuned, I started out with some simple chords, some simple roll practice and then a couple of songs. I was truly thrilled with the difference in brightness, sustain and depth of tone that this bridge has brought to my RK. I took it to my instructor for a session last Wednesday. I didn't play it at first, I just handed it to him and said tell me what you think.
He was very impressed after just the first few notes he played and went on to play a few songs. He said It sounded great. Now my instructor is a gentleman with an extensive background in the Bluegrass world going back to his days starting our playing in Kentucky. He said that my RK now has the sound that a Bluegrass banjo is supposed to have. I don't have to say it, but - I am a happy camper. THANK YOU, STEVE HUBER. Between your strings and now your bridge I now have an instrument I can be proud to play in any setting with anyone.
Keep on pickin', friends - Vince.
