I leaned my RK 85 A for one second against a sofa chair to do something wich I never do because I always put it back in it's case but NOT THIS TIME! ARG! and as I turned away my beautiful golden retreiver jumped on the chair and all I herd was a kathunk. A chill ran up my spine and as I turned around my RK was laying there on the floor face first with a broken neck just below the peg head. I haven't been able to have a good night sleep since. As I was in a panic I called our friend Greg Rich and I must say that I was impressed as he is working hard on finding a solution for my neck problem all with a bit of ribbing course. Oh by the way I did not scold the dog but I gave myself a great big kick in the rear for being so careless. I now have learned a valuable lesson, always put it back in the case!

I'm always worried about that myself. I have a pre-war Gibson Mastertone and I leaned her against the back of an old couch one night for just a moment. No... no broken neck but there was a nail sticking out, just below the couch material. When someone sat down on the couch it caused the back to move. This left my banjo with a 1/2" deep scar on the back of the neck at about the 7th fret and left me with deep regret every time I see it.
I applaud your restraint in not scolding your dog... very admirable - no call for me to explain why.
I hope all works out well with your neck repair. I am VERY interested in hearing how things turn out (what they had to do, how it is working, how much it cost, pics, etc.). Thanks much! m

Because it is only year old and it is serial # 00005 of the RK85A I think that I will probably try and replace the neck with a new one. I am worried that a neck repair will only give out in a few years from now with glues getting brittle over years and the constant string tention on the uper part of the neck. I will probably re-glue the old neck for now until I can get a new neck and keep the old one for a spare just in case something ever happens again as the RK85A is the banjo I use at all our gigs and it's the one I use the most. I love that little banjo, it kicks ass.

Sounds like a good opportunity to have Frank Neat RK reproduction neck made. Maybe even with a little custom work. But an original neck is always good to!

I'm going to post some picks of the broken neck tonight. We tried to glue it and discovered a second hair line crack just above the major break. This is why a new neck would be the best solution.

It is fixed! Our local luthier fixed it and did such a good job on it that you canot see any signs of repairs. Fortunately the break was in the black painted part of the top neck and after re-glueing a rock maple splinth and reshaping the neck he was able to re-paint the black part over the repair and re-spray the whole neck with catalysed poly. Great job and the neck is now stronger than before the break.

Thank's for your support. This luthier did a wonderfull job and I am having him build me a banjo. You should see the fancy inlay work he does.I am having him do a fancy vine fret board on the new banjo.
