Murphy Method On-line

From Augie on 2/25/2011 4:14:49 AM

Hi guys,  Yesterday I was on the Murphy Method website and saw that Casey Henry, Murphy's daughter, is giving on-line lessons.  I ordered my first session.

I have been frustrated trying to find an instructor who is in the same mindset as Murphy.  All of them want to push Tablature on me and I do not want to go that way.  I want to Learn by Ear.  Isn't that what this group is about?    Happy in Pennsylvania

Yes. I had lessons where a teacher would give me tab and then our next lesson would be just to see if I got the timing right. while timing is important I learned nothing of how to think. (you know its either give a man a fish or teach him to fish). About a month and a half ago I got on line lessons with John Boulding and he taught me how to listen and then how to play the words. It has made all the difference and I feel like I am finally making progress. I wish I had had this opportunity years ago. It is something that a guy in North Carolina can teach a guy in Indiana.
Good luck with your progress and glad you are happy.
Ken
PS Augie do you use a slow down device?

Hi Ken, I 'm not sure what you mean by a slow down device. I do have an occasional beer. Augie

Augie, I have to explain to you the difference between inspiration and slow down. ;)
No I got the Amazing Slowdowner and it enabled be to start really hearing what was being played. so far I have taken about 6 Scruggs breaks and can play them sometimes note for note. The slowness of this I feel is enabling me to develop my ear and I hope in a year to be a lot more fluent in the banjo. Because it is slow it also helps with my timing as I can get a better sense of the rhythm of the right hand.
It cost me $50 and has been a great investment.

Augie,
A slow down device enables you to take a recording and play it back at a slower speed. Amazing Slowdowner can playback as slow as 20%. the pitch does not change.

Excuse the double post. I don't know how that happened. I have VLC, a program that I use to play my CDs and DVDs and it has a feature that allows you to slow the playing down. Some of the songs on the Slow Jam with Murphy and Casey I slow to 90% to stay with them. Others I can play at 100%. So it has nothing to do with beer.
