I'm gonna feel silly posting this if everyone already uses one of these but here goes.

I've been playing by ear since I learned the guitar back in the 80s. By chance I was shopping in a music store years ago and found an AKAI U40 and WOWEE! You can't buy it anymore BUT... you can go here: http://evolver.fm/appdb/app/irehearse/ and read about or download one like it. If you've got some technique under your belt this will put your little race car into passing gear. Learning the banjo has been so much fun for me and a phrase trainer helped make it that way. With the help of a little tab, (cause my hearing is so bad) a phrase trainer, and few lessons, (Thank you Duncan!) learning tunes like Dawggy Mountain Breakdown is a lot easier. The phrase trainer will never get mad at you and kick you out of the class or tell you that you shouldn't have bought a banjo. So if you've been frustrated and achieved "perfect pitch" on your banjo by tossing it in the dumpster without hitting the sides then go get it back and give a phrase trainer a try! I'm not sure if the link I posted is the best one you can get but I was fairly impressed with it and it's not very expensive.

I hadn't had a lot of time to play with this phrase trainer but there is a feature it turns out I really love about this thing. When creating save points to loop back at any chosen tempo within a tune, you can "fine tune" your save points in either direction to get all the notes you're looking for. Having all the notes helps determine your rhythm and can change how you play or understand the whole song. Grabbing tricky stuff over the F chord in the middle of, and the D and G chords at the end of, the 3rd verse in Dawggy Mountain Breakdown was a snap! Thank you to the folks at iRehearse for a really cool tool! It's easy to get frustrated and discouraged with things that sound harder to play than they really are so give this thing a try! I downloaded the trial version just to play with it and I'm gonna go ahead and get the paid version. For 15 bucks it's worth it!
