I'm very happy to have found this group. I have been playing now about 14 months clawhammer style. I have not tried any songs by ear yet. I have a couple of questions for you.

Welcome. As to clawhammer I cannot speak to that however if you look at some of the posts by John Kuhn aka the Kidd he jas some great insight along with some other on learning by ear. Picking up the melody in your head and being able to strum the song along with hearing the chord changes is the best advice these folks have shared. I use the murphy method myself and it works for me and they have a quite accomplished clawhammer teacher who teaches by ear. You can see the DVD at themurphymethod.com. Thanks! So if I understand it right the jist of playing by ear is mostly strumming and picking out individual notes? I'm just totally dumb about the whole concept. It amazes me that people can just listen to a tune and then play it themselves with no other aids. I'll check out the Kidd posts. Thanks.

Mandy do you have a lsowdowner of some type? My tascam phrase trainer lets you put a cd in, slow it down and loop 2 or 3 notes at a time.You may surprise yourself.

All i can vouch for is my tascam. It is a stand alone that you drop a c.d. in.You have to use ear phones and be a little good at learning to operate it along the lines of a dvd player or new t v set.There are ones for computers that i don't have any knowledge of.Janet davis or elderly instruments or about any good sized music store can fix you up.Some one else may have some input on this.

Hello, Mandy. I'll get right to it. 1. tune the claw banjo to Double C.,If thats something you need help with. I can post an mp3 here to get you there. 2. strum then thumb a while that should sound good allready,,, now 1. place an index finger at the 5th fret on the bottom string . Thats the Long skinny one far from the short string on top. Strum / thumb/ now sing "glory glory glory Halaluyah. With me so far. ok now strum down strum down thumb the lil string..... da da dah. Now sing " boil them cabbage

Elwood- Thanks but I meant I was at square one of ear training, not quite at the level you described I don't think. Thanks for the help. I posted over in the clawhammer boards and got some help over there too. Thanks
