I've been playing the banjo for 3 years and about 4 months back I started to learn songs by ear. I must admit this method is more time consuming for me but I do prefer it than using tablature or visuals.

Learning some technique (picking patterns and fingering) is the best place to start. I went out and got a banjo teacher right away! (Thank you Duncan!) Another fantastic tool is a musical phrase trainer. I use an old AKAI U40 but you can download the equivalent here; evolver.fm/appdb/app/irehearse/ I would also ad that learning a few scales isn't a bad or difficult thing and really helps develop your ear and familiarity with the instrument. My hearing is so bad now that good tablature is a must too. The phrase trainer is the real kick though! If you've never heard of or used one, do yourself a favor and check that puppy out!
