I still need a tab to start a song but I also will never get it unless I can hear the song is that any kind of ear training?

Rick, try to humm the song in your head. Over and over and over until it drived you crazy and then try to play the notes that are in your head and put it to the banjo. Try to make your banjo talk the song to you while you aare humming it in your head. It is hard to explain about the head thing but you will get it. Good luck and if you ever want to get on chatter real late at night when no one is on and pick togeather I am all for that. I can learn from you and you can learn from me. Good Luck

Hi Rick, You are very fortunate that the Tab Police are not reading this blog. They would come drag you out of your house and beat you up. You are the Administrator. You're supposed to be pristine.

Good group, so I will not squeal on you. Augie

Sorry Augie I had to cleanse my soul this is why I created this site I know it is the right way but as a wise man once told me it can take months to get your mind to accept this way of learning and we as a society are impatient and I agree I am one of those impatient ones but I will continue my track of learning by ear maybe I will invest in the Murphy Method DVD's money is a big issue with me due to wife's current health problems a lot of doctors visits and medicines take its toll maybe someone on here has a beginner dvd to sell for cheap of learning by ear.
Thanks Oscar any advice is welcome Buddy see ya on chat some night

Rick,
2 weeks ago I got amazing slow downer. I had trouble learning by ear because my ear is not that good. But this thing lets you slow it down and loop it and keep its pitch. IF you hear a break 50 or 100 times I really think you will start playing some version of it. It is like learning to speak a foreign language. You have to say please repeat a lot but that is how you learn.
That is my 2 cents worth and that may being paid to much.

Hi Rick,

Hang in there. I don't have a copy of The Murphy Method (TMM) Beginning Banjo Vol 1 to send to you, but If you will send me your mailing address I will order one and have it sent to your address. I have so much confidence in TMM that I would do that for you. Friend to friend. Augie

Rick,
I am sure you'll be quite pleased with Murphy Henry's stuff. I would offer this suggestion if you have been playing awhile: Don't jump ahead on her DVD's...follow them in order from beginning to end. I made that mistake many years ago and had to stop and return to the beginning. It is well worth it.

Also, I agree with Oalbrets: You gotta have the tune solidly and CORRECTLY in your head before you can pick it by ear. :^)
