I want to pass on an experience that made my day a while back. It made me appreciate learning to play by ear.

I went to a friends house who is a very accomplished banjo picker. I wanted a sanity check on how I was doing. I was playing a song for him in my slow deliberate novice way and he commented, "You are the only one of several guys that come to me for help, that recognize when they make a mistake". He went on to tell me that the others all work from Tab and don't hear their mistakes because they are so busy chasing the dots and do not hear what they play. They think that they have done it right, but when he pointed out their mistakes, they said they didn't realize that they had goofed.

Enough said

I can always tell someone that learned from tab and someone that learned by ear.
