I learned how to play guitar pretty much by ear, so when I began banjo I figured I could do the same. Often, if I hear a song I want to pick banjo to, first I will pull out the guitar to learn the chords by ear, then reach for the banjo.
I like to play along with songs that don't have banjo, but it fits in nicely to the song: "Windfall" by Son Volt, "Comes a Time" by Neil Young, "You Ain't Going Nowhere" by Bob Dylan (although Earl Scruggs played on a version by the Byrds).
And when I do pick along with someone like Del McCoury or Old and In the Way who already has banjo, I just try listen closely to what the banjoist is doing and follow along best I can.
I have recently started jamming with others (been performing solo acoustic guitar for years, but just started accompanying my buddies on banjo), and I can usually follow along pretty well. We're all sort of folkies, know a lot of the same songs.
Just joined the songwriters group here, too, because I've spent much of the summer writing originals on banjo.
