Fretless Dobson

From BlowingRockNC on 4/26/2014 8:57:50 AM

I recently received a custom fretless Dobson, with skin head dyed reddish brown and all brass hardware. It's really beautiful. It also has Nylgut strings. The Pisgah folks really know how to make an excellent banjo. Just to see how it might work out, I ordered a half inch Moon bridge from Elderly to substitute for the 5/8ths standard bridge. I just got it in the mail and put it on. I'm here to say that the banjo sounded great with the standard bridge, but it sounds even better with the half inch Moon bridge. The bridge doesn't cost very much, so some of you other Pisgah players just might want to give it a try. It obviously lowers the action a little, but it seems overall to make a more positive difference than I would have thought. Just an idea, but I'm happy with it. Now my Pisgah is even nicer sounding. Just my two cents.

I understand that the Moon bridge makes a big difference. Looks like the Rambler get one soon.

It really does make a difference, but for many it's just a difference of style and choice. I think the main point for me is to have a somewhat lower action, which you get with a 1/2" bridge over the 5/8" one, but many other people prefer it the other way around. I chose the Moon 1/2" bridge because I have one on my 1921 Gibson TB conversion, and I like it. Different strokes for different folks. The Pisgah is a great banjo either way.
