Winning formula

From kratty on 1/16/2014 11:21:05 AM

I received my 12" walnut Possum in mid December from Patrick and the guys and have been experimenting with different setups.  For my tastes, I've found a winning combination of bridge and strings.

Bridge is a 'Heavy' Stockwell Moon.

Strings are a custom set of the cryo ones from AMBC in the following gauges: 10, 24B, 15, 13, 10.5

I picked these gauges trying to split the difference between the two sets of Mary Z. Cox Signature strings, which I found either too light or too heavy.

The 24 bronze fourth string is pretty chunky, and I think I'm going to have to file the nut ever so slightly to get it to sit properly.  But it's worth it for the great tone it provides.

I tried one of those heavy moon bridges. It fixed the small intonation issue I was having but I found the sound to be too thin and bright for my taste.

Interesting that you had that experience. The heavy moon is, at least in theory, supposed to do the exact opposite of what you describe.

I could definitely see the lighter-weight moons having that effect with the wood-rimmed Possum.
