Need advice on Possum or Dobson

From GeoffB864 on 4/9/2020 6:53:13 AM

Have played Bass and guitar forever, but new to claw hammer. I love the Pisgah banjos but wanted to ask for some advice from those of you who own one. I plan to use by banjo primarily just playing in my home and also want to be able to sing with it. I want a warm, rich tone, with some volume to it. I love the way the Possum and Dobson both sound. Possum owners: can it be heard if you're playing with a guitars? Dobson owners: does it have a good tone to sing with?

Dobson Walnut owner. Yes you will be able to play almost anything with this Banjo. It can be play'ed loud or soft. It's up to you as the player. Set up is everything on any banjo. Good luck.

12" Possum Walnut owner. I got mine for the exact scenario you describe. Nice warm tone, no problem being heard with guitar.

12" Walnut Possum owner here as well. I have tried several Dobson Pisgahs with interest in buying, but always come back to my Possum! it has such a warm, woody tone. It is also very responsive and can cut through just about anything. Love this banjo. I have 2 others (Bart Reiter and a custom County Banjo, both with rolled brass rings) and always come back to my Possum for clarity of tone and responsiveness. They are wonderful instruments and the Possum is a truly unique model with the persimmon tone ring. Hope this helps.

Have you thought about Appalachian?
