It's been a very tough 18 months for my wife Kathy and our entire family as we continue our journey through Kathy's recovery from chronic lymphocytic leukemia. Through two bone marrow transplants, chemotherapy and radiation, we continue to have hope for a complete recovery and cure. After months of encouragement (okay, prodding really!) from the staff at the Freight and Salvage Coffeehouse in Berkeley, this wonderful northern California venue will be hosting a benefit concert on Friday, September 2 featuring over thirty-five performers. They have also established the Bill & Kathy Evans Family Fund for those who are interested in providing assistance but who cannot attend the concert. All proceeds will assist with my wife's long-term recovery and allow our two children, Jesse (28) and Corey (24) to return to as much of their normal lives as possible. In the coming months, I will be cutting back on my touring to take over as primary caregiver but I will still be teaching here at home as well as playing throughout California, along with occasional trips out of state.

The Freight is hosting a benefit concert with over thirty musicians on Friday, September 2nd at 7 p.m featuring Hot Buttered Rum with special guest James Nash from the Waybacks; flatpick guitar legend Dan Crary with Bill Evans & singer-songwriter Steve Spurgin and dozens more.

Also performing will be bluegrass banjo icon Alan Munde, Jody Stecher & Kate Brislin, Steep Ravine, New Mexico’s Hard Road Trio with Steve Smith, Tom Rozum, Eric Thompson, Keith Little, Sharon Gilchrist, Scott Nygaard, Alan Senauke, Steve Pottier, Max Schwartz, Larry Cohea, Avram Siegel and surprise special guests.

The Freight and Salvage Coffeehouse has established the Bill & Kathy Evans Fund to help Bay Area musician Bill Evans, his wife Kathy and their two children, Jesse and Corey, as they provide ongoing support to Kathy in her continuing recovery from chemotherapy, radation and two bone marrow transplants related to treatment for chronic lymphocytic leukemia.

Kathy Evans is a beloved Albany kindergarten teacher who has taught for more than twenty years at Cornell Elementary School and Kathy and Bill’s two children, Jesse (28) and Corey (24) grew up in the Albany school system. Over his twenty years of making music, Bill has performed with all of the musicians featuring in this performance, so look for many special collaborations and combinations in what’s to be a very special concert event. An anonymous donor is covering all of the Freight's expense for this performance, allowing 100% of the proceeds to go to the Evans Family to help cover expenses relate to Kathy's ongoing long-term recovery. Snap Jackson & The Knock on Wood Players perform on the Gallery Stage from 6 to 7 p.m.
