First plane trip with disassembled Saturn

From Jake516 on 4/23/2015 6:04:16 AM

Packed clothes around the neck which was positioned diagonally (for max clearance) in my checked suitcase. The pot  (don't call it that at security 8?)  went into my carry-on, also stuffed & surrounded by clothes.  I left the resonator home - saves weight, quieter practicing at night in the hotel, and allows easy access for TSA (not that anyone asked).

A few lessons learned -

(1)   Mark the bridge position to save time re-assembling (duh).

(2)   Similarly, take note of the neck heel position relative to the rim;  in my case it was flush, so real easy.

(3)   Bring a large elastic tie to bind the loosened strings to the neck so they don't go flopping all over the place.

(4)   Pack a lightweight folded gig bag so you don't need to disassemble for land travel.

(5)   Keep the strings long at the tuning machines, the close-cut one fell off.

(6)   Pack spare strings in case any don't make it through repeated dis- & re- assembly (of course !).

I'm flying next week and wondering if I can carry on the neck in hand luggage or would it be too long- any idea if I can do that? my check in bag is not that long so worried if it got bashed it might damage the neck.

Unfortunately, I don't have my luggage with me at the moment, so I can't check, but if you have a carry-on bag that matches the maximum dimensions of carry-on luggage as specified on the 'baggage' link on your airline's web page, see if the neck fits diagonally with some socks at either end as cushion. Sorry again, I don't remember, but I'm guessing it was too long in my case.

Some airlines allow you to carry on a musical instrument (assembled) as one of your carry-on items, you'd have to check with them ahead of time. Southwest was great when my son used to travel with his guitar or bouzouki to & from college.

thanks for that reply Jake, it's probably safest to pack neck on check I guess and pot could go in carry on. I don't want stress at check in. i'm travelling Chinese airlines so have no idea of their policies. hoping to find a picker or two in Shangai.
