Hi-Crown head on Nechville Classic?

From banjoverdose on 1/20/2014 7:42:08 PM

Any of you folks tried a hi crown head on a Nechvile?  I've been searching and searching for more bass/growl from the d string, and higher action.

I've read about it, but has anyone on here actually tried it?

First step for higher action: Have you tried adjusting the neck to raise the action? That should get you plenty high, or a higher bridge.

Can't understand why a high crown head would help, because a medium crown head can be plenty loose if you back off on the Helimount. Have you tried a Renaissance head, that should warm the sound up?

Heavier gauge on the 4th string might help, too, with regard to bass. YMMV.

Thanks for the reply jswkingsfield!

Yeah I have just about the heaviest strings that I can buy. .11, .13., .16., .24, .10, with the neck all the way up. And .24 seems to be the heaviest I can go without losing bass.

I feel like I've been compromising on how much I tighten the head in order to get the higher action that I want, so I figure maybe a high crown head might push the action up a little little, without making it too bright.

If the neck already is all the way up, ask Tom N. about a higher bridge and about what else can be done to get closer to where you want it to sound (I think Nechville bridges are in stock up to 0.75", and can made higher if you really want it that way). I'm wondering if you're just hitting the tonal limits of a curly maple neck -- maple tends to be brighter, it's the nature of the wood. Good luck!
