Well, technically I don't own one yet. However, I should have my Nechville Cosmos Custom within the next few weeks. It will have a cocobolo-phantom fingerboard with a starizon inlay. It will also have a custom cocobolo top with some custom inlay work. 8 months in the making - and it's almost here. So, if I am joining this group prematurely - it's only because I am THAT excited.

Phantom -- kinda.

It started life as a Nuvo... then a neck change made it into a Nextar - another neck change I've got a Phantom. I wonder what's next.... :)

An Awesome Orion model with a Black Heli-mount frame, Curly Maple resonator and nec,k with maple binding, 40 hole pro tone ring, and a Schatten BJ-02 pickup. Love it every day I play it!

Mines a Mahogany Nextar with Cascade inlay, a Corona Helimount, 20 hole Cyclotronic tone ring. Oh and I had Tom put a custom inlay doodle on the headstock so I can tell it's mine.

Phantom. A beautiful instrument. I especially like not having a 5'th string peg.

Phantom with galaxy inlay, and a Nechville Tenor neck too. I intended to switch off from 5 string to tenor but the tenor sound was so great i just left it on for more than a year. Last week i switched back to the 5 string and can't quit playing it. One of these days i'll save up the cash and buy a second pot so i can have both ready to play all the time.

Phantom Galaxy w/gold frame and hardware. A real looker and player for sure. Tom did some setup work on it a couple of weeks ago and now it plays and sounds better than ever. Now if I can just learn to play up to it's potential.

Vintage. As of today. :)

@Baltimonkey...

Good question, and I'll preface my comments with this: each had a drastically different sound from the other.

The Nuvo came with a mostly graphite neck (Benji Flaming now has that neck). It had a very bright sound.

The Nextar neck was mahogany, and it was very much what one would expect from mahogany. It had a big "round" sound.

The Phantom neck is walnut. It's made the banjo louder - not sure how, but it did. The difference in volume between it and the Nextar neck was quite noticeable.

So far, I really favor the walnut. I figure, if I ever swap out the neck again, it'll be for something else in walnut.

A what I guess was a custom I got used.
Maple with ebony fingerboard and wreath inlays.
Gold plated hardware. Some kinda pretty banjo.
A standard Vintage model in mahogany. My "go to" when playing with my band.

I plan to have a Phantom one day. Possibly walnut, but got to wait for a deal to surface.
I was lucky enough to get the above two at "deals".

Nechvilles are something else!

Gold plated and engraved Nuvo - - with the "space age" looking tailpiece, and a relatively "normal looking" peg head. Tiger Maple (not my favorite wood for banjo) neck and resonator.

Although Maple isn't my favorite for banjo wood (I love it on my fiddles), when I pick this thing I can feel the resonator punching out the notes both forward into the air and backwards into my gut. Can't seem to put this thing down. ;)

I love my Phantom, but I sure do like the peghead on the Nextar LOL. I think the neck attachment on my Phantom is brilliant ... I changed action in about 30 seconds ;)

I have one of two custom Rockygrass models that Nechville built. I believe it's similar to a Vintage, but it has the black hardware, galaxy inlay, and a custom Rockygrass headstock logo.

Walnut Phantom, wood tone ring, 6 back saving pounds, my baby!

nechville says:

As the builder, I get to play lots of different Nechvilles, but my favorite ones are the ones I get to play after you've loved them a while, They seem to mature and get a bit rounder. One day, I'll make one for myself, and not sell it.

Walnut Phantom, and an Orion neck adapted to a 1970 RB 250 pot with the famous "Flux-capacitor".

Bought a Nova (early Nuvo) in 1990 and traded it in on a Vintage model in 2010.

I play it every day.

I play a Classic with radiused neck and the 40 hole tone ring. To make the banjo even more versatile, I've got a wooden ring (timbr-tronic) and a Turbo module I can install if I want to really lighten the bano or play into an amplifier/sound system. The other neat thing I've got is a Nechville Zeus Nuvo (Tom Nechville's name for it) neck with built in capo and sliding 5th string capo mated to my Deering Hartford with what previously was called the flux capacitor, now called flex-tone. The Hartford neck warped and had to be replaced. Anyway, the flex-tone allows a Nechville neck to be put on a traditional banjo. I haven't come up with a fitting name for the combo yet. Maybe a HartNech? :)

Just obtained a Athena (2009). I've changed out the original tuners and tailpiece for black coated/plated replacements. Got a Kat-Eye (5/8", radius, compensated 3rd) bridge & radius capo on order. Also looking to experiment with the a different head (currently has a Rensance head). I love how easy it is to alter the setup on these instruments!

Hi everyone Rich Freeze here, I just bought a Nechville Athena. What a beautiful Banjo.Ligtht weight, but boy what a sound. I tweaking a liite bit to get more of a Bluegrassy sound. I might try a white Remo frosted head, it has Rensance head on it now Greag Kautz has a Nechville and when we meet at the SwampnGrass Bluegrass festival on Feb, 7th 8th and 9th at Victorian Village Resort in Elkhart Lake WI. He said he could help me fine tune a little. hope to see some of you there. If you need more info on the SwampnGrass Festival, check out Wisconsin pickers Website link here on Banjo Hangout.
