tunneled 5th string/ rolling nut

From blw on 9/3/2013 11:33:17 PM

I am intrigued with the tunneled 5th string.  Any concerns or issues you have found?

I have also heard that  some of the tunneled 5th strings have a rolling nut where it enters the fret board.  I'm not sure what that is or how necessary it is.  Any help or insights?

No concerns at all. Not sure what a rolling nut is. Nechville puts an unobtrusive spike at the fifth fret where the sting enters the tunnel and it works perfectly. I love not having a tuner on the side of the neck. It is the main reason that I chose the Phantom over the Classic DLX.

I agree: no concerns at all! Mine is an Athena, somewhat custom made. Just good quality, good sound, good service.

The newer Phantoms do have a rolling nut. Mine was completed in March '12 and is set up with this. I really like it a lot; a very clever bit of engineering that should be functional and durable. Like kwik605, I also like having no tuner on the side of the neck; it's very helpful when playing melodic-type runs and quite a bit of accompaniment.

Thanks for the comments and the photo.
Does anyone know if the roller can be retrofitted or if it is really worth the effort?

Yes I did have one of mine refitted- reason I thought it was cleaner than the spike that was originally there. Happened to be in MSP on business and Tom and his team had it done in about 2 hours-That's service! Just seemed to make good design sense to me- keeping the string from riding on the end of the tube, we are all crazy in our own particular ways.
