Could use some advice

From somarmd on 10/2/2012 3:48:11 PM

Hi, Nechville is a dream banjo for me.  I can't afford a new one at this time.  I noticed a used 96 Eclipse prototype in the classifieds.

what do you all think?  Is that an affordable way to go or should I keep on saving.  Thank you.

Hiya, Dave: I tried an Eclipse of about this vintage. The one I saw here in Seattle was tiger striped maple, original Helimount rim system, flat fingerboard, original Price straightline tailpiece, had a sweet tone, comfortable neck, a very good player. I was pretty entranced by its sound, nearly bought it, but ended up buying a Nechville Classic DLX because I wanted a radiused neck and the tone sphere rim system (yeah, that involved forking over more $$$$). I let a year-old maple Deering Eagle II go to make room for the Nechville, if that's of any help to your decision-making process. It is an option to some day swap out the rim in the future, it really depends on how you feel about a flat fingerboard as opposed to a radiused neck. Feel free to send me a PM!

I was right were you are 5 years ago! I bought a Nechville Nextar from the Hangout and have never regretted it. I have the last banjo I'll ever need to buy. I agree with with jswkingsfield comments above about the radiused neck. The Eclipse is a fine banjo and Nechville banjos are first rate.

Thanks for the comments. I'm going to try a place that has Nechville in stock and maybe some other's like Bishline so I can see, feel, and hear them.

Problem is I'm upstate NY......so finding such a place is slim, but worth the look.

Hey Somarmd, it depends where in NY you are, but if Toronto is close enough, I recommend the 12th Fret store. Wide selection of Nechvilles (and others) and an excellent staff. I tried out banjos there for a few months before finally committing to a Phantom, and they were always helpful and knowledgeable.

yeah thanks I did see there cite. It looks like the closest is Mandolin Brothers, about 4hrs away. I was hoping for closer. Nechville not sure about Grey Fox next year yet.

Update, Al Price helped me out and as a result became a Nechville owner today. It arrives on Monday.....can't wait!
